Works from the Life Support series were presented in BLÜTENPRACHT at Galerie Handwerk, Munich, as part of the city-wide Flower Power Festival. Bringing together international artists and makers working across glass, ceramics, metal, paper, textiles, jewellery and wax, the exhibition explored the enduring fascination of flowers in art and craft, from emergence and bloom through to decline, preservation and transformation.
Townsend exhibited Snowdrops, Celandine and Wood Anemone, three sculptures that draw attention to native wildflowers and the fragile ecological systems that support them. Displayed within hand-blown glass orbs, the works reflected the series’ ongoing concern with protection, containment and environmental precarity, while offering a quieter counterpoint to the exhibition’s more exuberant floral displays.
Presented at Galerie Handwerk, one of Germany’s leading venues dedicated to contemporary craft, the exhibition brought together contemporary approaches to botanical subjects from across Europe and beyond. The inclusion of Life Support highlighted the ecological concerns underpinning Townsend’s practice and the role of skilled making in drawing attention to forms of plant life that are often overlooked.
