Works from The Collector series were presented as part of Celf Gallery’s Winter Exhibition, celebrating the gallery’s second anniversary. Bringing together new work by gallery artists across painting, sculpture and mixed media, the exhibition reflected the breadth of contemporary art represented by one of Wales’ leading commercial galleries.
Townsend exhibited a buttercup sculpture displayed within a small antique glass vase beneath a traditional glass dome. Part of The Collector series, the work explores ideas of preservation, collecting and display, drawing on museum collections and Victorian botanical practices. The sculptures suggest wildflowers that have been gathered and contained, yet appear animated and full of character, as though they might outgrow or escape their confines.
The exhibition formed part of Townsend’s ongoing relationship with Celf Gallery, which represents her work. Presented alongside artists from across Wales and beyond, the exhibition introduced The Collector series to new audiences in Cardiff and highlighted the gallery’s thoughtful approach to exhibiting small-scale sculptural work.
