Botanical Wonders at Karin Weber Gallery, Hong Kong, brought together six artists exploring the natural world through a range of contemporary approaches, from sculpture and installation to printmaking and ceramics. The exhibition marked Townsend’s first themed exhibition with Karin Weber Gallery and introduced a new body of work developed specifically for a Hong Kong audience.
Created for the exhibition, the Asian Flowers collection focused on plant species deeply embedded within Chinese cultural traditions, including orchid, camellia, chrysanthemum, and magnolia. Researching the symbolism, histories, and cultural associations of each plant, Townsend developed a group of individual wax botanical sculptures that explored the movement of botanical knowledge and meaning across cultures.
Presented alongside artists working with both traditional and contemporary interpretations of nature, the exhibition highlighted the enduring significance of plants as carriers of beauty, identity, memory, and cultural exchange. For Townsend, the project marked an important opportunity to expand her botanical research beyond familiar native species and engage with new horticultural histories and audiences.
